Celtic Cross Pendant – History or Myth

At one point or another, we have all seen a Celtic cross pendant. In fact, it has become so popular that you can now purchase a Celtic cross T-shirt, coffee cup or just about anything else you could imagine. With the prevalence of renaissance fairs and novelty shops, the Celtic cross seems be growing in popularity.
But what does your Celtic cross pendant really mean? The answer to this can be a bit tricky.
It has been said that Saint Patrick introduced the Celtic cross during the time when pagan Irish were converting to Christianity. When he designed the Celtic cross pendant, he combined the pagan’s sun cross with the symbol for Christianity to form a new symbol to which pagans could easily relate. By linking the idea of the life-giving sun and the Christian cross, Saint Patrick was able to convert a large portion of the Irish pagans.

Interestingly enough, other cultures don’t uphold the notion that the Celtic cross pendant is a combination of the Christian symbol and the Celtic sun cross. Some cultures believe that the Celtic cross pendant’s four arms represent earth, water, wind and fire. Others believe the Celtic cross pendant represents north, south, east and west. In a way, the Celtic cross pendant could be regarded as kind of a spiritual compass that guides the bearer though the spiritual sea. Read the rest of this entry
